In 2021, Egyptian resident Andrew Medhat got sentenced to 3 ages in prison for “public debauchery.” But the guy hardly engaged in serves that have been debaucherous. Rather, police found out that Medhat was planning to meet up with another man, and officers were able to locate him through the gay hookup app Grindr and arrest him. Getting gay is not illegal in Egypt. Perhaps not scientifically. But within the hazy guise of “debauchery,” the authorities around have been able to flex regulations in a fashion that lets them impede in the privacy of a particularly susceptible population group.
